We were eager to set out for the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We had seen the great city of New York, wandered through history in Washington, DC, met the family in Louisville and laid back and did some shopping in Austin. This was to be a view of the United States that you can't imagine--you have to see it in person. I was hoping I had not made a mistake to have us visit all three Rims of the Grand Canyon. It had seemed like a good idea at the time of the planning! We had not seen the North Rim and it was the Rim less traveled but had a reputation of being worth the trip with its smaller but more intimate view. The South Rim is the most visited with its lodges and marked trails around the vast South Rim. Of course, we had to do the West Rim where the Skywalk was since a Belgian had helped with the original design. Jim and I were eager to see the canyon from different advantage points and we hoped that Eddy and Betty would go home with a sense of how different America is from coast to coast..
The day started out early and we had a good 8 hour drive to the North Rim. For the first time we were out in the desert with winding roads slowly taking us to the cool mountains that would lead to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. On the way end we saw the damage left behind by the fires of past years. It's amazing how the earth sets out to repair itself!
We managed to find the entrance and drive up to the parking area and walked over to the Lodge. It is an interesting Lodge with the dining area with its large windows overlooking the Canyon. I figured the first night we would treat our selves to a nice dinner in the main dining room. Later we would discover places to grab a quick lunch or breakfast but we it was a long drive and worth relaxing in style the first night.
As the sunset began we walked outside and took some amazing pics and walked down to the view point. As the dark descended we found a watering hole with a cowboy playing the guitar and giving us some songs. A few drinks later we were ready to go to our cabin. Our cabin had back to back rooms so we could knock on the adjoining door in the am.
Jim and I had opened the windows to get a breeze but Eddy was worried the mosquitoes would get in and find him! He now sprayed himself before going out and they were leaving him along but he took no chances!
It was a plain and simple room with two beds and a bathroom. Nothing fancy but it was after all in the midst of the wilderness!
The next day we walked some amazing trails and saw sites millions of years old. There is less people at the North Rim so you really felt like you had the Canyon to yourself at times. By 2 o'clock we had our souls satisfied with the view and some food in our stomachs and ready to start out for the 5-6 hr drive to the South Rim.
The Adventure continued....
