I had kept one piece of information from Jim and that was that the last 5 miles of the road leading to the West Rim was "unpaved". When we turned off the main highway we had about 4 miles to drive on paved roads before we hit the "monster road"! Through all the bumps, holes and dust from passing busses, Jim was heard muttering "good thing this is not MY car! I'd NEVER drive MY car here!"
We passed a few signs that looked like it "might be lodging" but kept driving till we hit the main lodge. We used the facilities and looked around the shops while I checked in for our tour the next morning on the Skywalk and got directions on going back down the unpaved road about a "mile" and on the left there would be another unpaved road leading to our "ranch".
We were a little nervous as we had seen nothing that looked like it could resemble a ranch! However, we followed the instructions and sure enough there was a turn off. We went down the road about a mile and came to what looked like an old western town complete with the Welcome Ranch archway. We parked in the lot and Betty and I go to look for the check in and all we see is this old western looking "town" replica and no lodging! Betty hugs my arm and says "I think I sleep in the car tonight"! I tell her she may have company!
Our check in wrangler can't find our lodging reservation! I hear Betty muttering, we all sleep in the car! I am not worried as I know they must have it and sure enough he wrangles up two room keys finally.
We start the walk and there around the corner are cabins! I think we all breathed a sign of relief! They are actually quite nice and have that porch on the outside where we will sit later and view the night sky. Before we go to the dining hall we walk around the area marked off to resemble what an old western town might have looked like years ago. We take our pictures besides the cemetery with the amusing headstones. Eddy gets his picture by the traveling jail and we are able to finally relax.
Our package included supper so we make our way down to the dining hall for some barbeque chicken meal. It turns out the food is quite good and they even have a cowboy singing some songs. A bus load of Japanese tourists come in later. They even have a magician and so we wander up to his corner and he amazes us with card tricks! We swear he is better than anything in Las Vegas!
To top off our night, there is a cook out, some more songs and I show Betty and Eddy how to make s'mores! What we thought might be our worse experience, turns out to be a great experience.
