For 9 months I have searched and planned for the grand vacation with Eddy and Betty. I keep checking to make sure I didn't forget anything or get the dates for lodging mixed up! I almost panicked last month as I couldn't find a place in DC that I thought was a good location and affordable. I checked again on Air B'n B and saw this charming B and B and it looked like we got the whole house even though we only needed two bedrooms instead of three. My two DC experts, Matt and Casey both told me it looked like a great location. But I sit here now and wonder "what if it's a dump?"
Jim and I walked over to the Fort Green Apartment today to get the keys. We had only seen it once and it was at night. We took a quick tour of the apartment and it looks even better in the daylight! It's not a big place but at least we won't be dragging suitcases up 2 flights of a brownstone narrow staircase!
I feel so nervous! Jim is totally calm but then he just automatically assumes I have the whole thing perfectly planned! I do get the occasional lecture about "not planning too much each day!" I don't want to overwhelm them or everyone will be exhausted but I know that you have to have a system if you are going to try and get a good sampling of New York City. Plus, today is beautiful but what if it rains one of our days? We don't want to just sit around looking at each other! Trying to plan for things we can do that are more inside.
Okay, now I am driving myself crazy! "It will all work out" I repeat several times today! I think about how many times we have been to Antwerp and how great Eddy and Betty, Irene and Stef, Guillaume and Irene have been to us. I just want to give them the kind of memories they have given us. I have tried to keep to our budget and I think I have us in some decent lodgings and haven't broke the bank yet! I have no idea how rustic the Grand Canyon Lodgings are but the view is worth it!
We talk with Matt and Marina about what there is to do in New York that isn't on the ordinary tourist list. They keep pushing for the Wall Street walk and Tenement Tour and neither are inexpensive. But they assure me they will be worth it. Jim reminds me that most things have been prepaid and everyone knows things will cost a bit in New York. I have to smile because it is usually me convincing mister conservative spender to "spend a little"! So it's settled. We will try those places out.
I have the babysitters lined up for Marina. Thank goodness for great nanny friends like Jenny! I am excited that Jim will get to meet Matt's parents, Debbie and Joe after 3 years!
Well, dear Blogger, it is time to say good night. I have doubled checked everything and now it's time to sit back and get ready to start the grand adventure. Anything I didn't do, we will improvise!
Tomorrow! Eddy and Betty will be here!!!!
